UK artist Rebecca Taylor painted Cambodia: Underwater Angkor Wat in 2025, after spending three weeks travelling through Cambodia and Vietnam. Inspired by the ancient temples, incredible history and untold stories, Rebecca created a surreal interpretation of one of Siem Reap’s most iconic landmarks.

Fusing memories of Cambodia with imagination, this painting places Angkor Wat beneath the surface of a tranquil lake, surrounded by colourful lily pads, which transforms a place Rebecca visited in real life into a dreamlike, otherworldly experience.

The story behind Cambodia: Underwater Angkor Wat:

“I had the pleasure of visiting Cambodia in 2025. Inspired by my trip, I wanted to create a painting that merged the country’s rich history and landscape in a unique way. I began by creating an orange paint inspired by the saffron robes worn by Cambodian monks. This colour formed the background for my painting, and while it was still wet, I scattered dry rice, one of the country’s staple foods, over the surface to create an organic pattern.

“Next, I painted the lily pads and allowed some to keep a little hint of orange. Finally, I added Angkor Wat, one of Cambodia’s most iconic temples, using images I captured during my visit.

“This painting is the first of two created during my time in Cambodia. The second is titled Cambodia: Australian Pouched Rat, which places a large rat beneath a banana.”
