As AI art surges in popularity, so too do AI art trend predictions from sources like ChatGPT, Midjourney, Claude AI, and more.
As an artist, it would be naive of me to think that artificial intelligence will have no impact on my future practice*. So, I have two choices. I can ignore it. Or, I can embrace it in a way that works for me.
With that in mind, I set myself an annual challenge at the start of 2025: to create the best painting for the upcoming year, with a little help from AI. I explore themes, colour palettes, and mediums. Then translate them into a physical painting.
So, if you’re interested in AI art trends, future art movements, or how artists use AI creatively, this article is for you.

How I interpreted AI Art Trend Predictions for 2026.

This year, ChatGPT gave me the title ‘Regeneration After Disruption’, along with the explanation: the standout artwork of 2026 is likely to explore renewal, interconnectedness, and a return to organic forms after years dominated by AI and ultra-digital aesthetics.
Very interesting.
I was then offered the following prompts and predictions…
2026 colour palette predictions
For 2026, imagine a warm, earthy-neutral colour palette with a neon accent:
- Muted clay (terracotta, warm umber)
- Weathered greens (sage, moss, oxidised copper)
- Soft sunrise tones (peach haze, pink amber)
- Subtle metallics (brushed aluminium, tarnished gold)
- A single electric colour (usually magenta). Side note: since I used magenta in my 2025 art prediction, I avoided this suggestion.
2026 art theme predictions
This year, there were four key themes at play:
- Nature reforming technology. This could see organic growth overtaking mechanical structures, the coexistence of natural and synthetic systems, or even lead to a critique of over-automation.
- Personal identity in a hybrid world, with ideas such as fragmented identity, post-digital humanity, and psychological adaptation to tech saturation.
- Memory, loss, and continuity. These pieces may feel like relics reconstructed from the future or archival objects infused with emotion.
- Quiet resistance. In these artworks, you may notice a shift from dystopian imagery to gentle optimism.
2026 art styles and medium predictions
Again, AI understood there to be four main art styles for 2026:
- Post-AI expressionism. This emerging style sees artists using AI-generated sketches as underpaintings, then covering them with emotional, deeply expressive strokes to emphasise the imperfections of manual work.
- Sculptural canvases. These will incorporate raised surfaces, carved relief sections, and 3D textures.
- Ultra-slow, handcrafted art that celebrates work that feels painstakingly made.
- Mixed media, which combines:
- acrylic or oil paint
- stitched textiles
- found objects
- digital transfers
- natural materials, e.g. pressed plant matter, ash, clay
2026 conclusion…
This long list of prompts and suggestions led me to create my painting, ‘Regeneration After Disruption: AI Art Trend Prediction 2026’.
It features a single fern leaf against a terracotta background, with several broken fern fronds. These broken fronds feature a glitchy white-noise pattern and have been stitched back on with thread the colour of oxidised copper.
How I interpreted AI Art Trend Predictions for 2025.

This year, ChatGPT gave me the title ‘Etheral Genesis’, along with the explanation: this piece is more than just a painting – it is a portal to the future, where AI and human creativity blend seamlessly.
Then, I was given the following suggestions…
2025 colour palette predictions
For 2025, imagine a dreamy colour palette that delivers cosmic, digital energy:
- Neon pink
- Teal
- Electric purple
- Ultraviolet
- Dark blue
- Soft grey
- Gold or copper accents
2025 art theme predictions
This year, there were four key themes at play:
- Integration of nature in art. Artists are increasingly incorporating natural elements into their work, reflecting a desire to reconnect with nature and foster a sense of serenity.
- Digital and AI art innovations. Advancements in digital technology and artificial intelligence are profoundly influencing the creation process. One such visual trend includes retro-futurism, which combines nostalgic views of the future with modern technology.
- Large-scale installations. There is a growing appreciation for large-scale art pieces that offer immersive experiences.
- Quirky art. This is characterised by artwork with a playful yet meaningful aesthetic, which focuses on individuality, sustainability, and emotional resonance.
2025 art styles and media predictions
The top three art styles and mediums include:
- Hybrid AI-assisted and hand-painted layers. These artworks see the artist using AI to generate an initial concept, then refining it with traditional painting techniques, such as oil or acrylic paint.
- Augmented reality integration sees AR elements being revealed through an app at a later date.
- Biodegradable and eco-friendly materials, including hemp-based canvases and natural pigments or plant dyes.
2025 conclusion…
This long list of prompts and suggestions led me to create my painting, ‘Ethereal Genesis: AI Art Trend Prediction 2025’.
It features a giant pink coral floating over a dark blue and purple background. And at the centre of the coral is a green planet surrounded by stars.
Overall conclusion…
Interestingly, each time I have done this exercise, ChatGPT has given me an increasingly in-depth answer. And while that doesn’t mean my painting will become the best-selling painting of the year, I just find this an interesting evolution.
Side note, since I’ve used ChatGPT for my 2025 and 2026 AI art trend predictions, I’m planning to compare a few different platforms for my 2027 artwork.
What do you think of my interpretations? What would you have created with these prompts? And how do you see the future of art?
That’s all for now ✌️
Your paint-pal

Hi there; I’m Rebecca, a British artist and copywriter, and I’ll never be ‘ready enough’ to write a bio in the third person. I’ve been practising my crafts ever since the day I picked up my first pair of scissors in primary school and glued my fringe to a collage. Tasteful, eh?
When I’m neither painting nor writing, you’ll find me gardening, snowboarding, baking cinnamon buns or practising Muay Thai.
*I know many artists who are understandably fearful of AI art generators, AI art tools, and the copyright infringement that can occur as a knock-on effect. And I stand with them. However, AI-generated art has a place in the twenty-first century, and this article addresses how I use it in my practice.
Frequently asked questions
How are artists using AI in traditional painting?
Today, many artists have embraced AI in their daily practice. This can range from an inspirational starting tool to aiding with the final execution – including refining concepts, colour palettes, and styles. Other artists use AI as a creative partner to help them overcome a creative block or think beyond their imagination.
Can AI predict future art styles?
In short, no. While AI excels at identifying key patterns and merging existing art styles, it cannot predict the future. Great art is set apart by humankind’s unpredictable creativity, which comes from experience, cultural context, raw emotion and connection.
Will AI replace artists or inspire new art forms?
Since truly great artwork relies on lived human experiences to create an authentic audience connection, AI is unlikely to replace human artists. That said, this powerful tool has played a massive part in evolving many art forms, including:
- Visual – AI paintings, style transfer, concept art
- Physical – 3D printed sculpture, CNC art
- Experiential – AR/VR immersive works
- Media – AI music, film, photography
- Literary – AI-assisted writing and poetry
- Interactive – Generative installations and games
How do I use ChatGPT or Midjourney for art ideas?
Start by using ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, then feed your favourite concepts into Midjourney as text prompts (using /imagine) to generate your artwork. This can look like:
- Asking ChatGPT for themes, plots, or scenarios, e.g., “Give me 5 fantasy story ideas set on planet Mars”.
- Adding more detail to a simple idea, e.g. “Describe a cute puppy scene with specific lighting, mood, and characters”.
- Creating lists of art styles (like cubism, surrealism), specific artists (like Van Gogh, Basquiat), or visual elements (cinematic lighting, watercolour, 3D render, camera settings) that you would like to incorporate.
- Asking ChatGPT to create a set of prompts suitable for Midjourney.
- Logging into Midjourney, finding your server, and then using the command /imagine followed by your prompt to bring your vision to life.
- Refining your idea by using Midjourney’s variation (V) and upscale (U) buttons. Or, feeding new ChatGPT-generated ideas back into Midjourney for better results.
